OpenAI’s latest research reveals how AI drives task crossover, with 43.5% of work-related ChatGPT messages stemming from outside users’ primary occupations.

OpenAI’s latest research highlights a significant shift in workplace dynamics driven by artificial intelligence. According to the Work at the Frontier report, 43.5% of occupation-specific ChatGPT usage involves tasks typically performed by other professions. This phenomenon, termed “task crossover,” is redefining job roles and workflows across industries.

The report analyzed over 800,000 work-related messages from U.S. ChatGPT users, finding that AI enables workers to handle tasks outside their traditional skill sets. For instance, small business owners now draft contracts and analyze finances, marketers troubleshoot websites, and salespeople explore datasets previously managed by analysts. OpenAI’s data shows this pattern is particularly pronounced among customer experience workers (77% task crossover), designers (75%), and HR professionals (69%).

Small businesses appear to lead the way in leveraging AI for multitasking. In organizations with 2–5 employees, 18.9% of ChatGPT work-related tasks fall outside core job functions, compared to 16.3% in companies with over 100 employees. This reflects how smaller operations, often lacking specialized teams, turn to AI as a versatile problem-solving tool.

Industries Seeing the Most Change

Marketing and engineering tasks are the most mobile, frequently crossing occupational boundaries. Marketing tasks, such as creating promotional materials, appear in 8.9% of messages from non-marketers, while engineering tasks like technical troubleshooting show up in 7.4% of non-engineering messages. By contrast, designers primarily draw on tasks from other roles (35.2% crossover) but rarely see their own work adopted by others (1.7%).

This redistribution of tasks is reshaping not only individual roles but also broader organizational workflows. OpenAI views these trends as an early indicator of occupational change, with AI usage patterns offering insights ahead of formal job description updates or labor market data.

Wider Context: AI’s Integration Across Sectors

The findings align with broader trends in AI adoption. In healthcare, for example, OpenAI expanded its ChatGPT Health tool to all U.S. users aged 18+ in July 2026, enabling secure access to medical records and administrative support. A 2026 AMA survey reported 72% of physicians now use AI in clinical practice, illustrating how AI adoption is transforming even highly regulated fields.

Education is also undergoing a similar shift. A July 2026 survey by Instructure revealed that while 90% of students use AI tools, fewer than half of educators have formal AI training. Initiatives like National University’s RAISE 5 framework aim to establish standards for AI integration into teaching. Meanwhile, in financial services, regulators are ramping up scrutiny to manage risks associated with large language models, underscoring the need for governance in advanced AI applications.

Implications for the Workforce

OpenAI’s research underscores a key takeaway: AI is not merely automating existing tasks but is expanding the scope of what individuals can accomplish. This shift may reduce traditional job silos, fostering a more fluid division of labor. For workers, this presents both opportunities and challenges, as the need for adaptability grows across all sectors.

With AI increasingly embedded in enterprise workflows, organizations must consider how to train employees for these hybrid roles. Additionally, policymakers and business leaders will need to monitor how these changes affect job markets and worker protections.

The next installment of OpenAI’s Work at the Frontier series will likely offer further insights into these transformations. As AI continues to permeate the workplace, its role in reshaping job functions will remain a critical area to watch.
