Key Takeaways

Bank of America and J.P. Morgan activate Swift payment upgrade.Swift framework reaches 60+ banks across 25 countries.Ripple and Circle challenge traditional cross-border networks.

Swift Brings Faster Transfers to Major US Banks

Swift announced Aug. 5 that Bank of America and J.P. Morgan have gone live with its new international retail transfer initiative, adding two major US banks to a framework designed to improve cross-border payments. The initiative allows consumers and businesses to see costs before sending money, receive the full amount transferred, and access faster delivery where local banking systems support it.

The new framework allows senders to view fees and exchange rates before confirming transactions, while recipients can receive the full amount sent without unexpected deductions. In supported markets, transfers can arrive within minutes, creating a more predictable experience for people receiving money from family members, businesses, and international partners.

Swift stated:

“Over 60 banks from 25 countries so far are backing the initiative, which just went live this year.”

Initial payment support covers Australia, Brazil, China, India, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, and Turkey, with Bank of America and J.P. Morgan among the first US banks implementing the framework.

Banks, Ripple, and Circle Compete for the Future of Payments

The Swift upgrade arrives as banks, blockchain firms, and stablecoin issuers develop different approaches to improving international money movement. Traditional financial networks, blockchain companies, and stablecoin issuers are developing different approaches to faster settlement, lower friction, and greater payment transparency.

The organization has expanded its technology efforts through a blockchain ledger initiative designed to support 24/7 cross-border payments, giving financial institutions a new infrastructure model for faster settlement and digital asset connectivity.

J.P. Morgan has also participated in the Bank for International Settlements (BIS)’ Project Agorá, a tokenized deposit initiative involving major financial institutions that explores how tokenization could improve cross-border payment efficiency and settlement processes.

Blockchain companies are pursuing alternative payment rails alongside traditional banking networks. Ripple is building blockchain-based infrastructure for international payments, using digital asset technology and connections to local currencies to help businesses and financial institutions move money across borders.

Stablecoins represent another blockchain-based approach to the same challenge by using digital versions of fiat currencies to facilitate faster international transfers. Circle has focused on dollar-backed stablecoin infrastructure, while its partnership with Nium expanded USDC cross-border payments for businesses seeking blockchain-based settlement options.

Cross-Border Payment Demand Fuels Innovation

The United States receives approximately $9 billion annually in remittances from abroad, according to the World Bank, supporting families, students, and internationally connected households. Rising demand for faster and more transparent transfers has increased competition among traditional payment networks and digital financial platforms.

Digital assets have introduced additional payment models, allowing users to transfer value through blockchain networks with wallet addresses, transaction fees, and confirmation processes.

The global messaging network connects more than 11,500 financial institutions across more than 200 countries and territories. The upgraded framework will expand as more banks join and additional payment corridors become available, extending access to faster international transfers.
