Why AI Agents Need Simple, Secure Identities Like Web3 Names

If someone texts or emails you claiming to be your bank, what’s the first thing you do? You most likely don’t just read the message, you check the sender. The name, the number or email address, the little details that tell you whether it’s real or a scam. In a digital world rife with impersonation, identity is the first layer of trust.

On platforms like X or Instagram, a small checkmark can make a big difference, telling you that an account is real and that it belongs to who it claims to represent. Without it, you’re left guessing, constantly second-guessing whether you’re interacting with the original or an impersonator.

On your phone, you save contacts with names instead of memorizing long strings of numbers. You assign names like “Mum,” “David,” “Work” so you know exactly who you’re calling or texting. It’s simple, intuitive, and, most importantly, it reduces mistakes. Imagine trying to communicate without those names, just raw numbers you have to recognize and trust every time.

That’s what Web3 is increasingly looking like today, especially as AI agents become more active participants. These agents can trade assets, execute transactions, and interact across decentralized systems without constant human input.

But as their capabilities grow, so does a critical challenge: how do you verify the identity of something that isn’t human?

In an ecosystem built on long, complex wallet addresses and easily replicated identities, distinguishing between a legitimate AI agent and a malicious one isn’t always straightforward. And when money and decision-making are involved, that uncertainty becomes a real risk. That’s where Web3 names come in.

What are Web3 Names?

Web3 names are blockchain-based identifiers that go far beyond traditional usernames. Unlike a social media handle or email address, a Web3 name is tied to a decentralized identity system, meaning it’s secure, unique, and cannot be easily taken or censored.

Popular systems like Ethereum Name Service (ENS) and Unstoppable Domains allow users to register human-readable names that link directly to wallets, smart contracts, and digital identities on the blockchain. Instead of dealing with long, complicated addresses like 0x4b9c…, you can use something simple like yinka.eth or cryptohero.crypto

Web3 names do more than just simplify transactions; they create a bridge between humans, wallets, and AI or digital agents. A single name can point to multiple addresses, services, or digital assets, making it easier to verify ownership and establish trust. 

Traditional usernames, in contrast, exist on centralized platforms and can be taken away, banned, or duplicated. Web3 names are native to the blockchain, giving them permanence, interoperability, and verifiable authenticity, qualities essential for AI agents and autonomous systems that need to operate securely and reliably in decentralized environments.

Why do AI Agents Need Identity Layers?

For AI agents to operate safely and effectively, they need a secure, verifiable identity that lets them interact autonomously across the decentralized web.

Autonomous transactions

The agents can perform trades, send payments, or control resources on behalf of a user. In order to do that, they need an identity which is trustworthy and proven. The Web3 name of the agent will help to ensure that its actions are recorded and legitimate.

Trust building for AI agents

With the use of identity layers, agents can present themselves and establish their reputation by demonstrating what they have done in the past. Therefore, they will not be treated as strangers who can behave in any way, but they will have a track record which will earn their users’ trust.

Decreasing dependency on intermediaries

In order to verify one’s identity and perform autonomous transactions without an intermediary, it is possible to have Web3 identities and rely on the cryptographic protocols rather than any centralized entity.

Creating interoperability between dApps and network

The layer of identity will allow the AI agents to operate and work effectively on many different decentralized apps, smart contracts, and networks. The same Web3 name will be recognized in many places, making it easier for the agent to jump from one ecosystem to another without having to register again and again.

Making it easier to maintain accountability and auditability

Using Web3 identity will make it easy to track the actions and decisions made by the AI agents. The auditability and accountability of the agents will be possible because they will not be able to escape, since it will be known who did what.

Making collaboration amongst agents possible

With the layer of Web3 identity, there will be a seamless interaction between the agents that will be based on their verified identity. The AI agents can create trusted networks, perform tasks in collaboration with each other, and share information among themselves easily.

Empowering personalization at scale

By using identity layers, artificial intelligence systems can securely attribute their actions to specific users or wallets. They can therefore make customized suggestions, handle user settings, or automate various tasks without invading the user’s privacy.

Use Cases Enabled by Web3 Names

Here are some clear ways Web3 names make real-world decentralized interactions easier and more powerful, especially for AI agents:

Payment: AI agents making and receiving payments independently

Imagine an AI shopping bot capable of making payments for services without any manual input by the user in the form of a lengthy wallet ID. Rather than sending to wallet IDs such as 0x4B3…, the AI agent would be able to use Web3 identities such as shopbot.eth to make payments and receive them.

Such a feature is already available via technologies such as ENS, where a Web3 name serves as a link to a wallet address, making automatic payments significantly more convenient.

Communication: AI-based verification of identities on decentralized platforms

Web3 identity systems can become an integral part of communication processes in decentralized communication and marketplace applications, since ENS names allow decentralized messaging based on Web3 names. Such decentralized messaging would provide users with additional guarantees that they are communicating with a trustworthy person. Decentralized marketplace projects such as eth.cd use ENS-based names as an identifier of a Web3 profile. 

Ownership and governance: connecting AI activity to verified digital identity and DAO engagement

When AI systems are involved in governance operations such as voting for proposals in DAOs and controlling shared resources, having a digital identity associated with their activities is essential. The use of ENS names allows us to associate AI activity with a verified digital identity, making it possible to validate who made that decision.

This kind of linked identity is crucial for transparency in decentralized organizations, which often use systems like the Decentralized autonomous organization model.

Interactions using cross-platform functionality: interactions with more than one protocol on web3

The use of Web3 names means that a person’s identification will remain consistent regardless of where transactions take place, even across various protocols, and even through different applications. 

Thus, it becomes much easier for automated agents to perform actions involving the exchange or transfer of assets without having to switch between different identifications.

Hosting of decentralized websites and content

Not only does a Web3 name allow for receiving payments, but it can also lead to hosting a website or some form of data. This means an AI agent could manage its own “site” or resource hub at a URL like agent.eth, where users or other agents can retrieve tools, data, or services directly tied to that identity, blurring the line between autonomous software and web-native presence.

Challenges and Limitations

While Web3 names offer exciting possibilities for AI agents, there are real challenges and limitations that need careful consideration before widespread adoption.

Scaling and utilization issues

This protocol is relatively new, and not all platforms, wallets, and protocols accommodate its use. There may be some issues with smooth interoperability among the AI agents before the adoption is widespread. For instance, ENS addresses function appropriately in the Ethereum blockchain; however, DeFi apps in other blockchains cannot recognize such addresses.

Contradiction between privacy and transparency

AI agents having permanent identities may lead to a contradiction between privacy considerations and transparency requirements. On one hand, transparency is crucial in building trust. On the other hand, the exposure of the strategies and behaviours of AI agents will lead to privacy-related problems that can be abused by others. As such, permanently linking a trading bot’s identity may reveal its algorithm.

Risks related to the security of using a permanent identity

A permanent identity implies the inability to correct the history associated with it. Once an AI agent is compromised, hackers can exploit its unique identity to misbehave. It is crucial to mention that smart contract exploits and phishing can be among the major risks here.

Governance: Who controls the identity layer?

An AI agent’s identification can cause issues if it gets stolen, misused, or wrongly assigned to another owner. Issues surrounding who controls the system and how disputes are settled will need to be taken into consideration. For instance, while the ENS uses community or DAO-based management, it can take time when a crisis arises.

Interoperability constraints between chains

Web3 names were designed to ensure their usage even on other chains. However, differences in protocols or other support features may pose limitations on its effectiveness. This may lead to an AI agent having an identity within the Ethereum chain, but it cannot be applied within the Solana and Polygon chains.

What the Future Could Look Like

The future of AI agents will depend highly on Web3 identity protocols. In order for such agents to effectively perform complex functions from portfolio management in DeFi projects to operating within the Internet of Things space, there needs to be a way to prove their identity.

This can be done using Web3 names, which provide agents with an identity protocol that ensures safe operation. Such agents can then use the name to verify their identity, build trust and complete various actions automatically.

In addition to operational efficiencies, web3 identities can open up entirely new business models for an AI agent to operate within. An agent with an identity that is both unique and verifiable will be able to participate in DAOs, control assets, or offer up its services without relying on a middleman at all.

Indicators that may be worth keeping an eye on as more companies adopt this technology would be the greater use of naming systems like ENS and other names in DeFi systems, marketplaces, and IoT systems.

The adoption of web3 identities in the next few years by AI agents would be just as essential as email addresses and usernames are for humans currently.

Web3 Names: The Foundation for Autonomous AI

With an auditable blockchain-based identity, AI agents will be able to transact on decentralized networks, perform transactions, and engage in governance without having to be monitored continuously by humans.

Such capabilities create the foundation for creating highly secure, transparent, and immutable interactions between AI agents and their ecosystems and help maximize the benefits of using them for any purposes, including those in the world of DeFi, traditional finance, IoT, etc.

The one thing that becomes evident when considering all this is that autonomy paired with a proper identity will be critical to the emergence of new possibilities at the intersection of AI and Web3. With the provision of Web3 names, AI agents will enjoy unlimited potential and be able to operate in decentralized environments without difficulty.
