Key Takeaways:

Bank of America has added focused leadership for its global digital assets platform. The move is part of the bank’s broader modernization of financial infrastructure alongside its AI initiatives. It follows other Wall Street moves to ratchet up investments in tokenization, custody and blockchain settlement.

Bank of America is making another move towards adoption of digital assets in its core business. The banking giant has appointed new executives to take forward its digital assets platform, scaled up artificial intelligence programmes, and highlighted its move into a blockchain-enabled world.

Bank of America Strengthens Its Digital Assets Strategy

It was reported that Bank of America has named Sonali Theisen as the new leader of its global digital assets platform. The move follows a series of other initiatives the bank has launched in the field of financial infrastructure for blockchain solutions, which are not focused on cryptocurrency trading.

Theisen will remain in charge of the bank’s Global FICC electronic trading and markets strategic investments, and will also be tasked with building, expanding and managing the bank’s digital assets platform. Her expanded role shows that Bank of America is bringing its blockchain efforts into the fold of its core business in institutional markets, rather than operating as an experimental business.

The digital assets platform will be used for tokenized deposits, crypto custody, blockchain settlement, digital collateral mobility and various other stablecoin-related infrastructure.

Digital Assets and AI Become Connected Priorities

In addition to its crypto-related leadership shufflings, Bank of America named Kevin Milsom to head its global markets platforms for AI transformation. The dual roles indicate that the bank sees AI and blockchain technology as complementary, with the potential to enhance the trading operations, automation, risk management, and market infrastructure.

The AI move comes as part of the bank’s tech strategy, as executives last year revealed its intentions to spend billions of dollars on artificial intelligence to boost productivity and create new revenue streams. Integrating AI with the digital asset infrastructure could further simplify settlement, boost compliance checks, and optimize operations in the institutional sector.

Wall Street Competition Around Crypto Continues to Intensify

As large financial companies scramble to claim a more prominent place in digital assets, Bank of America’s new organizational reshuffle comes at the right time. Banks are not just investing time in crypto trading, but are also increasingly putting resources into tokenization, blockchain settlement, regulated custody, and digital payment infrastructure.

Morgan Stanley has kept rolling out their digital asset business, and other global financial companies have launched career positions with a blockchain focus or now looked at blockchain-based financial products. In the years to come, blockchain technology is expected to be a major part of institutional finance, which is reflected in this increased competition.

The new hires also come on the heels of Bank of America’s previous digital asset initiatives. The lender has previously investigated tokenized deposits, stablecoins and crypto-related services, suggesting its blockchain approach isn’t limited to recent executive reshuffles.
