Key Takeaways

Bitgo picked Chainlink CCIP for $7.7B WBTC on Aug. 4, 2026.Chainlink replaces Layerzero as Bitgo’s exclusive cross-chain provider.Watch Bitgo migrate WBTC and future assets onto Chainlink CCIP.

The crypto company said on Tuesday all future Bitgo-issued digital assets will also use Chainlink’s Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol, or CCIP, by default. The decision creates a single framework for transferring assets between blockchains while applying the same security controls and operating standards across supported networks.

Build a Unified Cross-Chain Framework

Wrapped bitcoin, ticker WBTC, is a token that represents bitcoin 1:1 on blockchains other than the Bitcoin network. It allows BTC holders to use their assets in decentralized finance (DeFi), where they can trade, lend or provide liquidity on applications built on networks such as Ethereum.

Moving assets between blockchains requires cross-chain infrastructure, sometimes called a bridge. These systems transfer tokens or messages from one blockchain to another, making them a critical part of the broader digital asset ecosystem. Because bridges have historically been frequent targets for hackers, security has become one of the industry’s highest priorities.

In the announcement, Bitgo said standardizing WBTC and future assets on Chainlink CCIP will give it a more consistent security model while allowing the company to manage transfers and operational policies through a single infrastructure platform.

Tighten Security Standards

Bitgo cited several factors behind its decision, including Chainlink’s security architecture, institutional compliance standards, and built-in risk controls.

According to the company, each CCIP bridge route is supported by at least 16 independent node operators spread across different organizations, geographic regions and hosting providers. That distribution is designed to reduce the likelihood that a single failure or coordinated attack could disrupt transfers.

The protocol also supports issuer-controlled transfer limits and configurable transaction controls. Bitgo said those features can function as automated safeguards by slowing or restricting transfers if suspicious activity is detected before a broader incident develops.

Position WBTC for Institutional Adoption

Bitgo also plans to use the Chainlink Cross-Chain Token standard to establish unified versions of WBTC across supported blockchains. Rather than maintaining separate implementations, the company said the approach provides a consistent and verifiable security model while preserving Bitgo’s ownership of its token deployments.

Mike Belshe, CEO and co-founder of Bitgo, explained that the company’s long-standing focus has been security first. He said Chainlink CCIP provides the controls, reliability and risk management standards that Bitgo’s institutional clients expect as the company expands support for assets across additional blockchain networks.

Watch the Migration Unfold

The shift is far bigger than a routine technology upgrade. As financial firms spread assets across multiple blockchain networks, the battle to control the rails has turned ruthless. After the infamous Kelp DAO exploit on April 18, 2026, nearly $15 billion abandoned Layerzero for Chainlink, exposing exactly where institutions placed their trust when security was tested.

On Tuesday, Chainlink detailed that its infrastructure has supported more than $32 trillion in transaction value, secures more than $110 billion across cross-chain applications and DeFi, and powers roughly 70% of the global DeFi ecosystem. Bitgo’s migration adds one of the industry’s largest wrapped bitcoin products to that network.

The next milestone for users and institutions will be Bitgo’s rollout of WBTC onto Chainlink CCIP and the migration of future Bitgo-issued assets to the same cross-chain framework, providing a clearer picture of how quickly the company completes the transition away from its legacy infrastructure.
