The AB Foundation, an Irish-registered nonprofit organization chaired by former Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern, is being wound up after reportedly failing to conduct any operational business beyond its initial launch event.
According to Ireland’s Companies Registration Office (CRO) filings, the AB Foundation has applied for a voluntary strike-off to dissolve the company. While official records reportedly indicate the non-profit never traded, the foundation claimed in late 2025 that it donated over $1.9 million to support victims of a level-five fire at Hong Kong’s Kwong Fuk Estate in Tai Po.
Launched in early 2025 by crypto firm AB, the AB Foundation was positioned as an initiative aimed at using blockchain technology and artificial intelligence to transparently fund global philanthropic efforts. To build institutional credibility, the foundation recruited an extensive advisory network featuring nearly 30 former heads of state and international leaders.
Besides Ahern, prominent figures associated with the foundation include Timor-Leste President José Ramos-Horta, former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo and former Ukrainian President Victor Yushchenko. Despite its ambitious debut and global board recruitment, the charity reportedly never held a single official meeting following its inauguration.
The non-profit became embroiled in controversy after investigations revealed ties between AB and a Cambodian conglomerate facing U.S. sanctions over alleged involvement in crypto fraud, scam operations and human trafficking networks. The foundation was drawn into further controversy when its name became associated with a proposed cryptocurrency resort and development project in Timor-Leste involving a Chinese-born businessman linked to the foundation’s ecosystem.
Ahern pushed back earlier this year, stating he had “zero connection” to the Timor-Leste development or related donations and emphasizing that he knew nothing of the project beyond his ceremonial role with the charity. The former prime minister further asserted that there were no links between the Irish-registered nonprofit and sanctioned overseas groups.
With the voluntary strike-off process now underway, the Irish nonprofit will be formally dissolved, effectively bringing an end to the short-lived venture into crypto philanthropy.
